Legendary Women's Hoops Coach Pat Summitt Dies At 64
BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) -- Legendary women's basketball coach Pat Summitt died Tuesday morning from complications of early onset dementia, her family tells Knoxville, Tennessee CBS affiliate WVLT-TV.
Summit, who was diagnosed with dementia in August of 2011, was 64.
"It is with tremendous sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Patricia Sue Head Summitt," her son, Tyler, wrote in a statement provided to WVLT. "She died peacefully this morning at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most."
Over her 38-year coaching career, Summitt compiled an otherworldly 1098-208 (.840) record while leading the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team between 1974-2012. As the Associated Press reports, she's the winningest head coach in Division 1 college basketball history.
