Pedestrian Struck, Killed On 295 In Anne Arundel County
JESSUP, Md. (WJZ) — A car strikes and kills a man walking on a busy highway, snarling traffic in the middle of the Wednesday morning commute.
Derek Valcourt has more on what happened and the accident's impact.
Traffic on both directions of 295 had to be shut down as police investigated.
The traffic back-ups along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway stretched on for miles right during the height of Wednesday morning rush hour.
It was right around 5 a.m. when U.S. Park Police, who investigate accidents on the road, say a driver traveling southbound on the Parkway just south of 175 in the Jessup area struck and killed a pedestrian.
It's unclear why the man was walking on the highway.
Police say the driver who struck him did stop and wait for police.
Investigators say the man was hit following another accident on the same highway.
"We are still trying to determine exactly what happened. There seemed to have been an accident northbound and then the subject was struck southbound," said Sgt. Paul Brooks, U.S. Park Police.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the pedestrian killed, as they attempt to notify his family.
The accident investigation closed the northbound lanes of the highway for several hours. But it was the southbound lanes impacted the longest. It was shut down nearly five hours as accident investigators tried to piece together what happened.
It was 10 a.m. before all lanes of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway were reopened to traffic.
The tough morning commute also included an overturned trailer on 95 North just past the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Prince George's County that blocked all lanes of traffic.
