Landmark White House Peace Vigil Dismantled Again
WASHINGTON (AP) -- For the second time in less than six weeks, a landmark anti-war vigil has been removed from in front of the White House.
A lawyer who represents activist Conception Picciotto tells The Washington Post that the vigil was abandoned overnight by a volunteer. The attorney, Ann Wilcox, says U.S. Park Police apparently seized the protest materials when the vigil was unattended.
Picciotto and volunteers spent Sunday morning trying to recover and rebuild the display.
Picciotto started the vigil in 1981 to promote peace and warn against the danger of nuclear arms. Under laws for protesting in front of the White House, it must be continually attended or it can be seized.
Picciotto typically staffs the protest from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and relies on volunteers to be there overnight.
