Kosher Bakeries Busy Right Before Hanukkah Begins
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Many of us this week are still recovering from Thanksgiving. The holidays continue on Wednesday with Hanukkah.
As Mike Schuh reports, that means a lot of work for kosher bakeries.
When it's time to light the candles, Goldman's Bakery heats the oil.
"But donuts it's because of the miracle of the oil and that's why we have the fried foods," said Leah Cohn, Goldman's Kosher Bakery.
Things fried in oil, like donuts, are flying out the door. Partially because this is a holiday which celebrates the miracle of a single day's worth of lamp oil burning for eight days.
Now, modern celebration includes plenty of pastries.
"The cookies are more for the children. The cookies are big," said Cohn.
The cookies are shaped like a menorah or a dreidel, take your pick.
With holiday crowds hungry for the best pastries, these bakers need more hours in the day.
"We're going to try to have enough help, no lines, I don't like lines," said Cohn.
Unlike the high holidays, the bakeries don't close for Hanukkah.
