Townsend Highlights Van Hollen's Work On Social Security

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is praising Rep. Chris Van Hollen as a champion for Social Security, while criticizing comments by his opponent in the Democratic primary on the issue, Rep. Donna Edwards.

She outlined Van Hollen's efforts Saturday in The Huffington Post.

Social Security has been a contentious campaign issue. Edwards says Van Hollen supported past budget negotiations that included potential Social Security cuts, but Van Hollen says he never supported them.

Benjamin Gerdes, an Edwards' campaign spokesman, says voters can count on Edwards as a "progressive fighter." He says Van Hollen is "trying to rewrite his record of being willing to consider cuts to Social Security."

But Townsend, who endorsed Van Hollen last year, writes that Edwards is "misleading voters with no concern for the facts."
