Jury Awards $31 Million To Lord & Taylor Over Demolition

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The owners of a soon-to-be-demolished shopping mall in Rockville, Maryland, have been ordered to pay $31 million in damages after a jury ruled that they breached their contract with department store Lord & Taylor.

The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/nj36d98) reports that the federal jury awarded the damages Friday after deliberating for three days. The mall is owned by Lerner Enterprises, led by Washington Nationals owner Ted Lerner.

The award represents about half of what Lord & Taylor sought. Scott Morrison, an attorney for the mall, says Lerner expects to appeal.

Lerner had tried to shut down White Flint Mall and build a town center. Morrison says the mall is still scheduled to be demolished by early next year, but he says he's not sure what will happen after that.
