Re-Evaluation Ordered In Md. Hospital Slaying
ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) -- A Howard County judge will order another evaluation of whether a man accused of killing a fellow patient at a state mental hospital is competent to stand trial.
The judge heard Tuesday from a psychiatrist who determined that Andre Mayo is competent, but acknowledged that the evaluation focuses on his competency at a discrete moment in time.
Mayo is charged with first-degree murder in the death of fellow Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center patient, Rogelion Mondragon in October. Investigators said it was the second patient-on-patient slaying in a week at the hospital.
Judge Louis Becker played a recording of Mayo's outburst during a hearing last month. After discussion with both sides, Becker decided to request an evaluation that takes into account Mayo's history and the episodic nature of his illness.
