Judge Orders Woman To Repay $10K In Cancer Scam
TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- A woman accused of getting $10,000 from former Baltimore Ravens player Mike Flynn by falsely claiming she had terminal cancer has been ordered to repay the money and given a suspended five-year prison sentence.
Prosecutors say Lisa Hoppenstein Cohen, 41, had told friends and acquaintances she had terminal cancer and needed the money to pay for medical treatment. Flynn was an offensive lineman who left the Ravens in 2008. The Baltimore Sun reports that Cohen apologized to the Flynns in court and outside paid the former player $2,000 in cash.
She has been ordered to pay the rest of the money before the end of her three years of supervised probation, which she was also given on Thursday. Cohen blamed her behavior on alcohol, pills and cocaine.
