Johns Hopkins Life Commemorated On Death Anniversary
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A somber celebration as Wednesday marks the 141st anniversary of the death of Johns Hopkins.
Tracey Leong was there for the ceremony at his grave side.
This is the 16th year members of the Johns Hopkins community have come together to honor and celebrate his life.
"He died upon the year of the great Christian festival of the year," Neil Grauer, of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, said.
Each year a special commemoration for Johns Hopkins is held by his graveside.
"The name of Mr. Hopkins will be remembered longest in his connections with charities," a speaker said at his graveside Wednesday.
Mr. Hopkins first obituary, which was written in 1873, was read by a hand-selected group.
"Wanted to share with the community and one another the important contributions Mr. Hopkins made," Stephanie Reel, of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, said.
Honoring one of Baltimore's greatest philanthropists.
"At the time of his death, he knew he wanted to make a difference and so he donated $7 million to create a university and hospital that would bare his name," Reel added.
Institutions that have changed the world and today people place pennies on Mr. Hopkins tombstone to bring them good luck never living to see the profound impact of his generosity.
"You never know how far-reaching what you do will become," Grauer added.
For many people this is the first time they heard Johns Hopkins first obituary. This one is from the Baltimore American. Many people are familiar with the one from The Baltimore Sun.
Johns Hopkins is buried in the Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.
