Johns Hopkins Gets A High-Tech Children's Hospital
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The nation's top-ranked hospital completes its brand-new, billion dollar facility. More than 1,000 people will descend on Johns Hopkins to dedicate its state-of-the-art children's hospital. An adult tower is opening, as well.
Kai Jackson explains what the high-tech facility means for Baltimore.
A light show on the front of Johns Hopkins' new hospital on Orleans Street is a glitzy production for an institute known more for its methodical scientific research. It's not every day Hopkins opens a new hospital in Baltimore.
"It's about the future of medicine. It's about the care of adults and children and it's a celebration about the commitment Johns Hopkins had made to the world," said Dr. George Dover, Department of Pediatrics Chairman.
There's 1.6 million square feet of space with 560 rooms. The new facility will house both current emergency rooms, all of the current children's center and most of the adult hospital. The new hospital will have 33 operating rooms with cutting-edge technology.
"This is a place that not only gives the best possible care for children and families, but we take on the toughest problems and we're the innovators," said Dover.
It took six years to build the hospital at a cost of $1.1 billion. Doctors say the focus is on patients and families.
"The presence of family is critical," said Claire Beers, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
The hospital opens for business on May 1.
