Joe Hortiz Says Ravens Go For 'Total Package' Players
Joe Hortiz is in his fifth year as the Ravens' director of college scouting. He directs the Ravens' college scouting process, coordinating the schedules and cross-checking duties of the area scouts.
Hortiz joined the Norris and Davis show to recap the busy NFL Draft weekend for the Baltimore Ravens.
They began with discussing the "difference-maker" between picking Laremy Tunsil and Ronnie Stanley in the first round. "It was close, we were back and forth. They're both talented players but ultimately we look at the total package of players and accountability and dependability," said Hortiz.
The second round was also an interesting round where the Ravens chose Kamalei Correa over Noah Spence. Hortiz said, "Spence we thought was a good pass rusher, but we felt like Correa was definitely much more versatile."
Another questionable pick was the first choice in the fourth round of Tavon Young. Hortiz said, "He's a great kid. We picked him, and he and his family got in the car and drove right up north to the Ravens draft party. Very scrappy kid...he is full go competitive as can be in coverage. He's a really fast-footed, explosive type player."
Apparently, there were tears in the war room when Keenan Reynolds was asked to be a Raven. Davis asked Hortiz how they knew Reynolds could transition into the player they wanted him to be. "He's already started the transition. I definitely think he'll be able to make that transition after just watching him. He's quick and athletic with good hands and ball skills and he was obviously very productive with the Navy," said Hortiz.
