Jim Callis Of MLB Pipeline Discusses The Latest Trades And Moves Within Major League Baseball
Jim Callis, a writer for MLB Pipeline, joins the Scott Garceau Show to discuss the latest trades and moves within the majors.
Of all the teams competing for a pennant this season in Major League Baseball, the Oakland A's have been one of the most consistent, yet they haven't advanced in the playoffs.
Oakland made a very aggressive move to acquire yet another solid starter in the Cubs' Jeff Samardzija, but they gave up one of the best prospects in the minors to do so.
"Addison Russell is probably one of the top five prospects in the major leagues right now. I wouldn't have thought the A's would part with him, but they're a first place team looking to advance," said Callis.
On the other side of that fence, the Cubs have the third worst record in the National League, and Callis explained their reason for the trade, as well as the aftermath.
"It might be 2016 before we see Russell because the Cubs don't have a reason to rush."
The Orioles, however, are not in the same wait-and-see mode as an organization. Ideally, they'd also like to trade for a big name pitcher much like their cross-country rivals, but may not have the talent in the minors to do so.
"I don't think any prospect is ever untouchable. It just depends on what they get offered," said Callis.
"If the Rays want to trade David Price, the Orioles have think about giving up just about anyone in the farm system to make that happen. However, even if [they're] willing to give up Dylan Bundy, he alone isn't going to be enough to get price."
