JFK Ultramarathon To Include Appalachian Trail
BOONSBORO, Md. (AP) -- The JFK 50 Mile ultramarathon will still include a 13-mile section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Race Co-director Mike Spinnler tells The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown that the Cumberland Valley Athletic Club and the National Park Service have agreed to allow the trail to be used in November's 50th running of the race and subsequent races.
Spinnler says the National Park Service set a 1,000-runner limit in the 1990s, when the race attracted hundreds of participants.
As the race has grown more popular, organizers have allowed more than 1,000 people to register, assuming not all of them would show up.
Now organizers are looking at ways to expand the field of entrants in the future while maintaining a limit of 1,000 runners
on that portion of the course.
