Olympic Officials: Md.'s Jack Conger, Lochte and 2 Others Robbed at Gun Point
RIO DE JANEIRO (WJZ/AP) --Ryan Lochte, Maryland's Jack Conger and two other American swimmers were allegedly robbed at gunpoint by people posing to be armed police, according to the United States Olympic Committee.
"According to four members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Ryan Lochte), they left France House early Sunday morning in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village," said USOC spokesperson Patrick Sandusky. "Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes' money and other personal belongings. All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities."
Reports surfaced early Sunday morning when Lochte's mother, Ileana Lochte confirmed the robbery with Fox Sports.
However, IOC spokesman Mark Adams says reports are "absolutely not true."
Rio organizers spokesman Mario Andrada said he has been briefed on an "issue" involving the swimmer, but could not say if he was held at gunpoint.
USA Today and Fox Sports Australia both said Lochte was robbed and had his wallet stolen.
The 32-year-old Lochte swam in two events at the Rio Games, winning gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
Conger, who's from Rockville, Maryland, was set to compete in the 4x200m Freestyle event earleir this week, but was replace by Michael Phelps.
