Internet Splash: Navy Recreates Classic WWII Photo Underwater
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ/BALTIMORE SUN)—The Navy swimming and diving team is drawing a lot of attention for its underwater recreation of an iconic moment in U.S. military history.
The photo they released Wednesday afternoon on Twitter has generated a bit of Internet buzz. WJZ's media partner, The Baltimore Sun, reports it has since been retweeted more than 200 times.
Eleven members of the team recreated Joe Rosenthal's famous photo of U.S. Marines raising the American flag over Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima—but it's all done underwater.
Six team members pose in standing positions at the bottom of the academy's pool while five raise the stars and stripes, paying homage to the classic World War II photograph.
The team Tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the photo showed "Navy Men's Swimming and Diving at its finest."
The recreated shot is now the Navy swim team's header photo on Twitter.
