Fireworks Show At Inner Harbor Choreographed To Music
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The fireworks that sound off the beginning of 2012 are the biggest show organizers have ever put together in Baltimore.
Weijia Jiang has more on the work that went into the spectacular sound and light display.
For the technicians in Curtis Bay...
"It's a lot of work, it's dirty work, but it's fun," said Colin Dill of Pyrotecnico Fireworks.
Months of designing, weeks of prepping, and days of setting up, all lead to this: Baltimore's skyline completely lit up for the Inner Harbor's New Year's Eve Spectacular.
"The show is approximately 18 minutes long and it's choreographed to festive music," Dionne McConkey of Baltimore Promotion and Arts said.
Dill, who's in charge of the display, explains the show follows a strict script. Each shell is labeled and linked to a computer. Once the music starts, the beats trigger different racks of fireworks, which are set off from the water. They lift up to 800 feet in the air.
"I don't do any other show that has barges," Dill said. "I've been working for Pyrotecnico for two years now and it's my favorite show."
It's also one that brings in tens of thousands every year. Those who call Charm City home, are more than happy to share and show off their town.
"Some people say Baltimore is not a nice city," 12-year-old Dajaun Hopewell said. "I say, 'Oh well, look at the fireworks and you'll see how nice it is.'"
"When those lights go off it's like, 'Hey! I know you! We're together! This is awesome!'" Bridget Weber of Baltimore said. "They could be family, friends, doesn't matter. Everybody becomes one at that point."
And that's why Dill says this is a labor of love he loves to wrap up.
"You hear the crowd start clapping and cheering and hair on your arms stands up," Dill said. "It makes you feel good."
