Inner Harbor Celebration To Honor Phelps & Other Md. Olympians
BALTIMORE (WJZ)— Honoring a champion. The city of Baltimore gears up to honor its finest Olympian, Michael Phelps.
Rochelle Ritchie has more.
On Monday, the city will not only honor the world's greatest Olympian but also the Paralympians, who are among the greatest athletes in the world.
He is the most decorated Olympian of all time and has the medals to prove it.
"None of this would even be possible without the help of each and every one of you," Phelps said.
His success in the water calls for a celebration.
"They really represented not only their spot but the state of Maryland, the city of Baltimore and the county really, really well," said Tracy Baskerville.
The city of Baltimore says it will recognize that hard work at an outdoor event scheduled next week.
"I am glad something is happening. It's a great American tradition to have these events when the teams do well," said John Cadigan.
"Awesome. He's great. I wanted to see him do it---get all those medals, break the record," said Chris Brown.
"He makes us look good. He gives the kids hope to one day go to the Olympics," said Richard Brown.
Phelps ended the 2012 Olympics and his swimming career with 22 medals, six of them won in London. His determination and Olympic ability reached beyond Meadowbrook and Baltimore City.
Phelps will share the stage with several Paralympians, who the city also says earned recognition.
The celebration of athletes will take place Monday at the Inner Harbor.
"They really show it is possible that when you have those dreams as a kid, they can come true," said Baskerville.
The event starts at 4 p.m. It is free.
