Inmate Stabbed At Western Md. Prison
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say an inmate has been stabbed at the Maryland Correctional Training Center in Hagerstown.
Mark Vernarelli, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, says the inmate was stabbed Monday night and a helicopter was called in to fly the inmate to a hospital. He says the injury is not thought to be life threatening, but medical personnel, concerned that the inmate's lung might be punctured, chose to fly him to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
Vernarelli says three inmates were fighting in a housing unit at the medium security prison that holds 2,550 men. He says correctional officers controlled the situation and recovered several weapons. Vernarelli says the two other inmates were treated by prison medical personnel.
