Businessman Gets 21 Months In Md. Bribe Case
BALTIMORE (AP) -- An Indiana businessman has been sentenced to 21 years in federal prison for bribing a geologist in return for excavation and rock-hauling contracts at a Maryland quarry.
The U.S. attorney's office says Larry Spann, 62, of Madison, Indiana, was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore for wire fraud.
Spann also was ordered to pay more than $988,000 in restitution to Lehigh Cement Co. for overbilling the company as part of the scheme.
The bribes and kickbacks were for contracts at the company's quarries in Union Bridge, Md., and Mitchell, Ind.
Former Lehigh geologist Michael Kilbourne is serving a two-year prison term for his role in the scheme.
