Hundreds Attend Fundraiser For Officer Shot During Navy Yard Shooting
WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- Taking steps to recovery. An officer shot during the Navy Yard shooting risked his life helping others. Now the community is reaching out to support him.
Linh Bui has the inspiring story.
A weekend fundraiser in D.C. brought out hundreds of people. Organizers sold shirts and held a silent auction -- all to help one incredibly brave officer.
It's easy to describe Officer Scott Williams:
"Hero. That's the only word that comes to mind," said Heather Munsterman, Manassas Police.
Williams was one of the first officers at the Navy Yard shooting. He ran into danger, searching for the shooter trying to save lives. Williams was shot in both legs, cracking a femur bone in one leg and shattering it in the other.
"There's actually folks here from the Navy Yard who were in Building 197 that he saved that day," said Moseley.
Over the weekend, more than 300 people attended a fundraiser to help Williams with costs that are building up due to his lack of mobility.
"He is such an awesome guy. He's still smiling, standing and his progression is doing so well," Munsterman said.
There were officers from across the country, friends and even total strangers.
"A lot of people I don't even know. It's really something else. It's not something you ever expect. People have been great since this happened," said Williams.
Williams has been going through intense physical rehab for the last two months and now says he's the one who's thankful.
"I'd like to say 'thank you' to everybody that's out here. Everybody that supported me," Williams said.
His goal? Get back on the street and back on duty.
Williams is a K-9 officer and jokes he has to go back to work because his dog really needs him.
The event raised more than $8,000. All the proceeds went directly to Williams.
