House OKs Speed Limit Boost To 70 Mph On Maryland Highways
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A push to raise the speed limit from 65 to 70 mph on Maryland highways has cleared another hurdle.
The House of Delegates voted 126-10 on Thursday for a measure sponsored by Del. Wendell Beitzel, a Garrett County Republican.
The Senate voted 39-7 last month for a bill sponsored by Sen. George Edwards that does the same thing. The House passed the bill last year, but it stalled in the Senate.
Supporters say other states have a speed limit of 70 mph. They also say the increase would not be mandatory statewide. Opponents, however, says it's dangerous, because drivers will exceed the speed limit and drive at unsafe speeds.
The two chambers will have to pass the same bill to send it to Gov. Larry Hogan.
