Patient At Baltimore City Hospital Dies After Fire Breaks Out
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A patient is dead after a fire ignites inside a hospital room. The circumstances are under investigation.
Christie Ileto has the latest details.
The fire department says it's unclear exactly how the mysterious fire started, as is the identity of the patient who died in it.
A hospital patient dies, but it's after the Baltimore City Fire Department says a sudden fire ignited inside the University of Maryland Medical Center.
"Unfortunately, there was a victim who suffered burns as a result of a fire," said Acting Chief Jeffrey Segal, Baltimore City Fire Department.
Fire crews say the fire broke out late Friday evening on the 11th floor of the hospital inside a patient's room.
"When our units arrived at the scene, the fire was already extinguished by the personnel at the University of Maryland Hospital," Segal said.
As of Saturday, the city fire department says it can not confirm exactly how the fire started, or why it started in that patient's room.
A spokesperson for University of Maryland Medical Center says the flames were contained to one part of the hospital and no one else was impacted, saying: "We can confirm that one patient has died. The fire was put out quickly and is currently being investigated."
While the investigation continues, the fire department prompts fire safety no matter where you are.
The hospital says patients nearby had to be evacuated to different parts of the building.
According to the hospital, it's unclear how much the damage from the fire will cost.
