Heavy Snow Creates Travel Woes In Maryland
BALTIMORE (WJZ)--The winter storm is creating a headache for those trying to get in or out of Maryland.
Derek Valcourt has more on the impact the storm is having on travelers.
Inside BWI, the departure and arrival board is a sore sight for hundreds of passengers who now have nowhere to go.
Among them is a group going to a wedding in Jamaica.
"I had a great best man speech all planned. Now, unfortunately, our flight got canceled, and we can't reschedule for another time, so unfortunately we can't make it there this weekend," said Dan Smith, stranded flyer.
Airlines canceled hundreds of flights in advance of the storm. Many diverted planes away from Baltimore.
"I anticipate the airlines will gradually resume their service tomorrow," said Jonathan Dean, BWI spokesman.
To clear the runways, BWI has more than 75 pieces of specialized equipment, including one of the biggest snow blowers in the United States.
An army of staff and a fleet of trucks quickly had the airport's runways, tarmacs, roads and parking lots down to wet pavement. Still it was no help to stranded passengers crossing their fingers for better luck Friday.
"I'm hoping that plane takes off. That's what I'm hoping for," said Eric Sten, stranded flyer.
On the roads, some MTA buses found themselves stuck in the snow at 295 and on 495 a toppled tractor-trailer caused its share of traffic problems.
At Penn Station, cancellations on Amtrak service north and south left travelers with few alternatives but to hurry up and wait.
Amtrak will continue to operate on its modified schedule Friday. For more information, click here.
