Heartwarming Reunions: Hundreds At BWI Home For The Holidays
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Many traveled hundreds, if not thousands of miles just to be with loved ones over the holiday. And this Christmas, they're happy they did.
Monique Griego has more on the rush to get home for the holidays.
Christmas is all about being with family, and we saw a lot of happy reunions.
Few people are happier than Katja Boyd to be at BWI's baggage claim. She hasn't seen her son for six months. His flight from Chicago just landed.
"When I said, 'I'll pay for your trip home,' he loves that most. It's better than a Christmas present," said Boyd.
WJZ was there when she got her present--her son Richard--healthy, happy and a bit overcome with emotion. He doesn't know his uncle from Austria is hiding just around the corner. He hasn't seen him for 15 years.
A few feet away, newlywed Gerry Johnson -- a soldier now living here -- is overjoyed, getting to see his wife, who just flew in from Alabama.
"We waited a long time just to see each other, so it's awesome," Johnson said.
"Oh, it feels wonderful, honey, because it's been a little minute. We just got married, so we have to kind of travel back and forth to see each other," his wife, Chrysanthemum Johnson said.
It's also a reunion for the Lennox family at the baggage claim. Grandma holds her special girl.
"It's been six months since she's been in. It's good to see family, good to spend Christmas together," said son Matt Lennox.
"It's the best Christmas you can have, to be able to hold loved ones," his mother, Ellen Lennox, said.
You'd be hard pressed to find many here who disagree with that.
Airline travel is slightly down this year, with the vast majority of people hitting the road to their holiday destinations.
Two million Marylanders were expected to travel this holiday--more than 90 percent doing it by car.
"The traffic's a little crazy today. A lot of drunk drivers out there," one driver said.
"Most of the time on the holidays, it's pretty crowded," said another driver.
But being able to be with family this holiday is definitely worth any trip.
"This is the best present. This is the best present. Gosh," Richard Boyd said.
There were no major travel problems in Maryland.
AAA Mid-Atlantic says, nationwide, more than 94 million Americans were expected to travel this holiday.
