Harford County Mourns Respected Law Enforcement Official's Passing
BEL AIR, Md. (WJZ)-- A former Harford County sheriff and beloved law enforcement official has died after a long illness at his home surrounded by family.
The Harford County Sheriff's Office said Theodore S. Moyer, 83, of Edgewood passed away around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 17.
Moyer was appointed as Harford County sheriff in 1981 and was elected by voters to serve in that position from 1982-1986. Before that post, Moyer served with the Maryland State Police (MSP) for 30 years before retiring as a major. While with the MSP, he was a commander of the Greenbelt post, the North East, Valley and Bel Air barracks, and the Northern Troop.
Moyer also mentored hundreds as a youth coach for many years.
"We lost a great man in Sheriff Moyer. History will remember him for his contributions to the State of Maryland as a member of the Maryland State Police and for his contributions to Harford County as sheriff," Harford County Sheriff L. Jesse Bane said. "Those who knew him on a more personal level will remember him for his devotion to his family and for his devotion to our youth."
Moyer and his wife Elaine had three sons-- David, Michael and Steve Moyer-- and four grandchildren. Steve Moyer also served with the MSP, retiring as a bureau chief and with a rank of lieutenant colonel.
There will be a memorial service for Moyer on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. at Mountain Christian Church located at 1824 Mountain Road, Joppa, Md. 21085. There will be a reception following the memorial service at Richlin Ballroom, 1700 Van Bibber Road, Edgewood, Md. 21040.
