Hanlan Scores 26, Leads BC Past Maryland 69-58
BOSTON (AP) -- They beat Duke and opened a nine-point lead in the first half at Boston College. What happened next, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon never saw coming.
The Terrapins scored just five points in the first 10 minutes after the break, then allowed BC to go on a 12-0 run late in the second half Tuesday night as the Eagles won 69-58 to take advantage of Maryland's letdown after its big win over the Blue Devils.
"My team is a challenge every day to figure out what we're going to get," Turgeon said. "I don't think it had anything to do with the game Saturday. It had to do with having heart, a little bit of determination."
Freshman Olivier Hanlan scored a career-high 26 points and Eddie Odio had a career-high 11 rebounds for BC (12-14, 4-9 Atlantic Coast Conference). Hanlan was 3 for 6 from 3-point range and also had seven rebounds, and Lonnie Jackson scored 13 for the Eagles, who had lost three of four -- including a one-point loss to Duke.
Logan Aronhalt scored 26 points, making seven 3-pointers -- both season highs -- but no other Maryland player scored more than nine.
The Terrapins (18-8, 6-7 ACC) had won three of their last four games, including a victory over then-No. 2 Duke on Saturday.
"That was a tough game for Maryland," BC coach Steve Donahue said. "They're a very young team. They came off a huge win. I think that's tough for a young team, going on the road coming off a win like that."
The Eagles held Maryland without a basket for 7:15 early in the second half and then scored 12 straight points to turn a one-point deficit into a 61-50 lead with 1:46 to play. Maryland missed 22 of 26 shots before hitting three in a row, including a pair of 3-pointers by Aronhalt, to cut an 11-point deficit to 65-58 in the final minute.
But the Terrapins couldn't get any closer by fouling because the Eagles made 16 straight free throws down the stretch, and 21 of 22 in the game.
"It's been tough lately (at the end of games), but we did well today," Hanlan said. "It takes stops, and (it) starts on the defensive end."
Maryland's victory over Duke -- something BC couldn't quite accomplish -- had the Terrapins receiving votes in The Associated Press Top 25. But they were unable to follow up against a team that hadn't been able to do more than put a scare into some of the ACC's top teams.
The Eagles lost to Miami and Duke by one point, and absorbed a 64-59 loss at Maryland on Jan. 22. BC has lost six ACC games by 5 points or fewer.
"I don't know if I've been more proud of my team than tonight," said Donahue, who pumped his fist in celebration at the final buzzer. "I thought we just played really inspired basketball for 40 minutes."
BC took an early lead but it was 24-24 when Maryland hit three consecutive 3-pointers, two of them from Aronhalt. The Terrapins scored just five points in the first 10 minutes of second half and then went five minutes without a point.
