Hagerstown Police Chief Retiring
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Hagerstown Police Chief Arthur Smith says he's retiring after 12 years in the western Maryland city.
A city spokeswoman said Wednesday that Smith's retirement is effective Sept. 6. Capt. Mark Holtzman will be acting chief until a successor is named.
Smith previously served for 26 years with the Baltimore Police Department, retiring at the rank of major.
In Hagerstown, he focused primarily on the city's drug problem.
In 2005, Smith took a yearlong leave of absence to work with the U.S. military and the Afghan National Police in Afghanistan.
