Hagerstown Balks At Hosting Food Giveaways
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The city of Hagerstown says charities must stop using a city-owned parking lot to give away food to the homeless.
The Herald-Mail reports that the City Council decided Tuesday to help a consortium of local churches find another location for their weekly food giveaways.
The group, led by Soul Food Ministries, has been using the downtown Market House parking lot for several years. The ministry says it serves 50 to 100 people a week.
The city says it must find another location after September.
Councilwoman Penny Nigh says the city has become known as a place to get free food. The city's public works director says he's gotten inquiries from two other groups that want to give away food in the parking lot.
