Hagerstown, CSX Target Crimes Against Homeless
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Police in Hagerstown say they're working with CSX Corp. to curb violence against the homeless after a homeless man was beaten to death on railroad property.
Police Chief Mark Holtzman told The Herald-Mail Thursday that he's concerned about violence against and among the homeless. He says officers are checking more frequently at city parks for people illegally drinking alcohol.
CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan says the company is working closely with police to clean up railroad property where homeless people gather.
Thirty-eight-year-old David Miller of Hagerstown is charged with first-degree murder in the June 15 slaying of 47-year-old Robert Dunavant.
Miller has denied allegations he beat and kicked Dunavant after Dunavant cursed at him while they were drinking with others on CSX property.
