Hagerstown Ballclub Revives Woolly Bear Contest
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The minor league Hagerstown Suns say they're reviving a woolly bear caterpillar contest that was recently dropped by the Hagers-Town Town and Country Almanack.
The baseball team's mascot is a woolly bear. Suns General Manager Bill Farley said Wednesday it is the club's duty to keep the contest going.
The almanac announced last week it was ending its 30-year tradition of having children collect the caterpillars each fall and awarding prizes for the biggest and smallest. According to folklore, one can predict the severity of the upcoming winter by gauging the relative widths of the caterpillars' black-and-brown bands.
The baseball team says it will work with the almanac to promote the contest in the local school system.
