Group Touts Western Md. Trout Stream Restoration
BLOOMINGTON, Md. (AP) -- A national conservation group is touting the restoration of a western Maryland trout stream polluted by acid mine drainage.
The Washington-based National Fish Habitat Partnership said Tuesday it has released its first video, highlighting restoration of four miles of Aaron Run, a tributary of the Savage River near Bloomington.
The $215,000 project includes a machine that periodically dumps crushed limestone into the stream to neutralize acid seeping into the water from old coal mines.
Workers also repaired the eroded stream bank and replanted about 20 acres of native, streamside vegetation.
The group says brook trout have been reintroduced to the stream.
The work was overseen by the Maryland Bureau of Mines with funding from federal, state and private sources.
