Graul's Celebrates 10th Annual Fight Cancer Day
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Baltimore family touched by cancer many years ago decided to do something about it. On Saturday, they'll reach a milestone.
Ron Matz has more on a commitment to help others.
At Graul's Markets, they're making a difference. Saturday is the 10th annual Graul's Fight Cancer Day. It started with a loss in the family.
"Saturday is the tenth year for our Graul's Fight Cancer Day. Five percent of our sales that day will go to the American Cancer Society. We also have raffles and outdoor events," said Kate Graul-Poffenberger, Graul's Markets. "My grandfather, Harold Graul Sr., died of cancer and that sort of started it. He was very community involved. We started this after he died. It's gone on to remember a lot of other people within the store who are still battling cancer or who have lost their lives."
Five percent of Saturday's store sales will benefit the Relay for Life in northern Baltimore County.
"Graul's is the single largest contributor to Relay for Life. Obviously, the whole purpose of the event is to raise money to fight cancer and the support is just over the top in terms amount of how much money they can provide for us," said Jim Higbee, Relay for Life.
From the start, the community has embraced Graul's Fight Cancer Day. In nine years the event has raised $480,000.
"Graul's is one of our biggest supporters for our north Baltimore County event, the Relay for Life. They bring in anywhere between $40,000 and $60,000, which is phenomenal," said Molly Schreiber, American Cancer Society. "The money goes for research, it helps us provide services for our cancer patients, their caregivers and their families. And it helps with research that hopefully will prevent and cure cancer."
Besides food and entertainment, there will be information booths and even a chance to win an iPad.
"We've raised $480,000 in nine years. Last year we finally broke the $50,000 mark for the day. That was great, especially in this economy. So we really hope to hit another $50,000 on Saturday," said Graul-Poffenberger.
It's a good way to help others in a decade of giving back.
Saturday's Fight Cancer Day will be held at the Graul's Markets in Mays Chapel, Hereford, Ruxton and St. Michaels.
