Governor Surveys Irene Damage
HOLLYWOOD, Md. (WJZ) -- Governor Martin O'Malley surveyed some of the damage left in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Mike Hellgren was with him.
The sounds and sights of recovery greeted him.
"We have lived here 28 years and we've never experienced anything like this," said one woman.
"It's the worst I've seen in my lifetime down here," said one man.
"It shocked me that there hasn't been a greater loss of life," said O'Malley.
As he met the victims, many of them are still hurting from the monster storm that brought high winds and flooding to parts of Maryland and brought down trees on their homes.
There was no glamour in Hollywood, Maryland, this day---just plenty of resilient people working hard to get back to normal.
"It's devastating really, it's heartbreaking," said Ross.
The governor heard concerns over insurance and stories from the height of Irene. While the damage here was great, most of what is gone can be replaced.
"A lot of these trees were just gorgeous and now it doesn't even look like the same place," said Ross.
"Where do you start and when's it ever going to get better," said one woman.
It could take months to clean up the damage.
