Gov. O'Malley Giving 'Serious Consideration' To Run For President
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Now that the legislative session is in the books, Governor O'Malley turns his attention to a run for president.
He tells WJZ's media partner, the Baltimore Sun, he is giving serious consideration to a run in 2016.
Political reporter Pat Warren has more on O'Malley's plans.
As Governor Martin O'Malley contemplates the future, he turns attention to the presidency.
"The future we seek is not a future of less opportunity, it is a future of more opportunity for all Americans," O'Malley said.
"I need to be spending a lot more energy and time giving serious consideration and preparation to what, if anything, I might have to offer should I decide to run for president in 2016," he said.
O'Malley's comments to the Sun editorial board are not surprising. He's made a name for himself nationally on the Sunday talk show circuit, and he's on the list of contenders for 2016.
"The primary reason I think my name has been mentioned occasionally in the company of such great public servants as Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden is because of the accomplishments we've had and the effectiveness we've had through two administrations," said O'Malley.
O'Malley sees his work in Maryland as potential groundwork for the nation--legalizing same-sex marriage, giving in-state tuition breaks and drivers licenses to illegal immigrants, repealing the death penalty and passing gun control.
"I need to properly allocate the attention, the time, the thought power, the brain power necessary to give the serious consideration to that weighted responsibility that it deserves," he said.
O'Malley's term as governor ends in January 2015.
Governor O'Malley is heading to Denmark Thursday evening for a conference on progressive government.
