President Obama Cancels Trip To Asia As Government Shutdown Enters 4th Day
WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- Late Thursday night, President Obama cancels a planned trip to Asia, with no end to the government shutdown in sight.
Meghan McCorkell explains hundreds of thousands of workers will spend a fourth day home without pay.
Both Democrats and Republicans appear to be holding their ground, and that means there's no end in sight for the shutdown.
Federal offices shut down. Parks closed. Workers at home. And the government shutdown doesn't appear to be ending any time soon.
Thursday, the president blamed the House speaker for refusing to allow a vote on a short-term spending bill.
"Speaker John Boehner won't even let the bill get a 'yes' or 'no' vote because he doesn't want to anger the extremists in his party," said President Obama.
House Republicans are trying to pass bills to fund certain agencies one at a time. Democrats say they won't reopen the government on a piecemeal basis.
"But because there is an insistence on no negotiations, no talking, my way or the highway, we are here," said Rep. Eric Cantor, (R) House Majority Leader.
So the stalemate continues.
Maryland Democrat Steny Hoyer is now co-sponsoring a bill that would give furloughed federal workers back the paychecks they're missing out on. A vote on that could come Friday or Saturday.
