Glenn Younes: A Day Tracking Tiger
Generally the field in any golf arena is the one tracking Tiger. Sunday at Merion I, along with the smaller than normal gallery, (not fully because of his position but lack of course space) were the only ones tracking the world's number one. It's an odd sight to be on the course and media center midday Sunday and almost not word one about Number 1. The rest of the field was wondering if Phil Mickelson would win his 1st National Championship. Instead it was Justin Rose marking the 1st time in 43 years an Englishman has won our Open.
Tiger's chase for Major Championship number 15 will have to wait yet again, five years and counting now, this time until the Open Championship at Muirfield and the July 21 Sunday final round. No golfer has had the "regular season" Tiger has this year, with his 4 victories already but he scuffled at the Memorial 2 weeks prior to the US Open and it carried over. Some can and will use the wrist injury as a reason but Tiger won't so I won't either. Not sure what happens to the man of steel on and around the greens but in the Majors that has been his kryptonite as of late. Finishing T-32 at +13 is not a terrible outcome for most the field but for the greatest golfer, at least of our generation, it's completely unacceptable and becoming more his character than not. Not good news for those tracking his progress to 18 majors. It i good for those in pursuit of catching a glimpse of Tiger. Less winning means a few less spectators. If this keeps up, it's a wonder if crowds will shrink. I guess not as Tiger will rebound...the question is when? Time isn't running out yet but we are certainly tracking Tiger.
