Gas Prices Soar Throughout Maryland
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Across the nation and here in Maryland, gas prices are soaring. The price at the pump has increased every day for 32 consecutive days. Some states are already averaging more than $4 a gallon and our state's not far behind.
Kai Jackson has more on how bad it could get.
Gas prices are noticeably higher and drivers are fuming.
The price of gas is burning a hole in the wallets of some drivers. Many are doing a double take as they fill up their vehicles.
"It's putting a big dent in my wallet. I mean, like I said, $60 just to fill the tank up. I mean, it used to take about $30 to $50," said driver Khiyes Sanders.
According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.73 a gallon. It's 43 cents more than the average cost of gas just one month ago. AAA says one of the reasons gas prices are higher is that the price of crude oil has gone up as well. AAA says an OPEC decision a few months ago to decrease production by one million barrels a day reduced supply and at the moment, demand is down as well.
"Investors believe that oil will continue to rise so that's even further inflating the crude oil prices and subsequently gas prices," said Ragina Averella, AAA.
Marcus Allen admits it's not cheap to fill up his Audi R8. Allen, who's a doctor, says he uses the car for recreation and not everyday driving.
"We're dependent," Allen said. "We're dependent on oil, we're dependent on fossil fuel and it has to make a change. We have to make a change."
AAA says switching to the summer fuel blend should reduce prices but that's not expected until next month.
