Gas Prices Continue To Drop
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The national average price of gasoline is currently $2.33---down six cents from last week. That's also much lower than the national average a year ago.
Amy Yensi reports motorists are getting a much-needed break at the pump.
It's the one Wall Street ticker people are happy to see tumble.
"I'm happy about it. What's not to like, right?" said Carol Openhym.
Labor Day has come and gone and gas prices continue to drop in Maryland and across the country.
"It has actually been trending rather low and that's largely because of an abundance of supply, both globally and here in the United States," said Ragina Averella, AAA Mid-Atlantic.
Experts say an increase in American production and the global economy taking a hit are causing a gas overflow. It's also giving drivers a welcome break at the pump.
"Obviously it does affect everything else so at the end of the week, you kind of have to say, `What do I need to save on to afford driving my car," said Jimmy Finney.
Some motorists say there should be a better way to keep the cost of crude oil down.
"There's gotta be a reason for it. Why wasn't it this way when it was $5 a gallon?" said Openhym.
"We can expect gas prices to continue to trend downward, particularly as the price of gas catches up with the price of crude," said Averella, AAA Mid-Atlantic.
Analysts say barring any natural disasters---for example, a hurricane---prices should continue to drop through the fall.
The website Gas Buddy shows the cheapest gas to be in the southwest, where in many places, it's below $2 a gallon.
