'Future Coast' Will Ask Public Opinion On Sea Rise
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Researchers will ask Anne Arundel County residents later this month for ideas about how to cope with rising sea levels.
The Capital newspaper of Annapolis reports a team led by Karen Akerlof of George Mason University invited 10,000 random Anne Arundel households, hoping at least 100 people would come out to discuss coastal flooding and sea-level
rise.
The event, called "Future Coast," will be April 28 in Severna Park. Participation is limited to those with invitations.
Organizers plan to forward the participants' suggestions to local and state governments.
Pre-workshop and post-workshop surveys will help the academics tell if the effort has been worthwhile.
Future Coast is a collaboration among George Mason University, the Naval Academy and Anne Arundel Community College.
Its $135,000 funding comes from the Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant.
