Funeral Held For WWII Soldier Returned To Maryland
DUNDALK, Md. (AP) -- The remains of a Dundalk soldier killed in Germany during World War II have been laid to rest in Dundalk 66 years after he died.
Mourners filled the pews at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Dundalk on Saturday during services for Robert Bayne, who was killed along with two others while crossing the Rhine in March 1945 on a risky volunteer mission. Bayne's now 83-year-old twin brothers spent years trying to find his remains. They eventually succeeded after the mission's lone survivor met with family members. The survivor's account convinced the twins that their brother was
buried in a French military cemetery.
DNA samples taken from each twin three years ago helped Army researchers make a positive match.
