Fundraiser Held To Help School Shooting Victim With Medical Bills
PERRY HALL, Md. (WJZ) -- Overwhelmed by support. Just over a month after he was shot on the first day of school, Daniel Borowy is out in the Perry Hall community. At a fundraiser in his honor Tuesday night, Daniel sat down for the first time with WJZ.
Kai Jackson has more on Daniel's incredible recovery.
Daniel Borowy's family is glad that he's recovering nicely, yet they fear bills from his medical care could be overwhelming.
It's a momentary break from a recently stress-filled life for Daniel Borowy. The 17-year-old student at Perry Hall ate at McDonald's, his favorite spot. It's called Dinner With Daniel.
Borowy was shot on the first day of school this year. Baltimore County police have charged another student, 15-year-old Robert Gladden, as an adult with attempted murder in connection with the shooting.
The story astounded those who heard about it and made international news.
"Daniel, he's the kid that got shot in the high school and so we're having a celebration to make sure he's okay," said Faith Conklin.
Yet this gathering is also the family's appeal to the public for help. Daniel spent two weeks in Shock Trauma after the shooting. He requires daily nursing care and other medical-related treatment. He already threw out the first pitch to start the Orioles/Yankees divisional series.
"He's still got a ways to go. He's come a long way," said Daniel's mother, Rosemary Borowy.
"My boys, as soon as they heard that this was going on for Daniel, they said, `We gotta go do that for Daniel,'" said Perry Hall teacher Dan Probst.
Saturday, the Baltimore Blast will lead a fundraiser in White Marsh called Goals for Daniel. All proceeds will help the family with medical expenses.
