Frostburg State Reports Football Player's Death
FROSTBURG, Md. (AP) -- A Frostburg State University football player has died after collapsing during practice.
School President Jonathan Gibralter announced the death of Derek Sheely in a campus email sent Monday. He called Sheely a "truly exemplary human being."
Sheely collapsed Aug. 22 after being escorted from the field. He died late Sunday at the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
He was fullback for the Bobcats and a senior majoring in history and political science. Sheely was from Germantown.
Gibralter said Sheely's family sent him a message saying that he had "never run from a challenge and he fought this with everything he had."
