Frederick Official Seeks Change In Hunting Regulations
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Frederick County commissioner is seeking to repeal a prohibition on rifle hunting for deer in the southern part of the county.
Commissioner Billy Shreve is hosting a public meeting Monday night in downtown Frederick.
State hunting regulations prohibit shooting deer with rifles south of Interstate 70 in Frederick County. But it's legal to hunt there with handguns, shotguns and muzzle-loading firearms.
Shreve says rifles are the most accurate and efficient weapons for deer hunting. He says repealing the ban would help reduce an over-abundant deer population.
Shreve also says citizens should be allowed to shoot deer on the Monocacy National Battlefield, which lies south of I-70. The National Park Service is considering using government sharpshooters to reduce the deer herd there.
