Frederick Eyes Camping Limits After Occupy
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A recent experience with the Occupy movement is prompting Frederick officials to consider limiting camping on city land.
The Frederick News-Post reports that aldermen discussed the matter at a meeting Wednesday. Their discussion was prompted by a weeklong encampment last month on city land along Carroll Creek.
Sleeping in city parks overnight is banned, but Frederick has no ordinance referring specifically to camping. Boy Scouts have been allowed to camp on city property in the past.
The city attorney is drafting an ordinance that would include limits on the length of camp-outs, ensure sanitary standards and apply to everyone.
The aldermen say unregulated camping could create problems due to limited numbers of public restrooms and trash receptacles.
Police say the Occupy Frederick campers did no damage.
