Franchot Urges Voters To Reject Congressional Map
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot is urging voters to reject the state's congressional map, which will be on the ballot in November.
Franchot, a Democrat, spoke out against the map Tuesday on WBAL Radio's The C4 Show.
The comptroller says the redistricting process has embarrassed the state and further eroded public confidence in the state's political process. Franchot says that while he's a Democrat, he would prefer to see Democrats win fair contests, "ones that aren't fixed before the election."
Opponents of the redrawn map, which was approved in a special session late last year by the Democrat-controlled General Assembly, say it has been gerrymandered to favor Democrats. But Democrats who support the map say it reflects demographic changes.
Opponents gathered enough signatures to petition the map to the ballot.
