Four Firefighters Injured In North East Fire Overnight
NORTH EAST, Md. (WJZ) -- Four firefighters were injured overnight in a blaze in Cecil County.
The fire broke out in a mobile home in the 100 block of Superior Court in North East around 12:42 a.m. Maryland State Police and Cecil County Sheriff's Office were first to arrive and they attempted to get inside using a sledgehammer, said Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire.
When firefighters arrived and got inside they found heavy fire burning inside. Conditions deteriorated and firefighters had to exit through a window. They initially thought someone lived inside, but later learned it's vacant.
Two firefighters were flown to Bayview Burn Center with 20% burns on their body. Another firefighter was taken there by ambulance and is expected to be released later Wednesday. A fourth firefighter was taken to another local hospital for treatment and has been released.
A bomb squad and a K9 team were on scene looking for traces of accelerant.
The trailer is known to local and state police as a place where homeless people use as a resting place, which is why they initially thought someone may be inside.
The cause of the fire is not known.
