Former Towson, NFL Star Sentenced To 30 Years
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―From local and national football star to prison inmate, a former Towson University star running back is sentenced to decades in prison for attacking a woman in South Carolina.
Mary Bubala has more.
A jury found 42-year-old David Lee Meggett guilty of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old college student. He's going to prison for 30 years.
While Meggett's performance at Towson in the late 80's and in the NFL in the early 90's was stellar, his actions off the field were anything but.
While a player at Towson, Meggett was charged with soliciting sexual favors in a Baltimore city police sting.
In 1998, he went on trial in Canada for assaulting a woman. In 2007, he was convicted of sexual battery after being accused of assaulting a former girlfriend.
He was serving his probation for that crime in South Carolina when in 2009 a woman accused him of rape and burglary.
"He climbed on top of her, forcibly removed her clothes, chocked her to break the consciousness, pinned her arms behind her back and he raped her," said Chad Simpson, prosecutor.
Meggett's attorney told jurors the two knew each other and the sex was consensual. Meggett never took the stand in his own defense.
Meggett's attorney says he will appeal.
