Former Ravens Head Coach Brian Billick
Former Ravens head coach Brian Billick joined the Norris and Davis show to discuss the Aaron Hernandez case in comparison to what he went through with Ray Lewis thirteen years ago.
Steve started out by asking Coach Billick about the Monday after the 2000 super bowl when he became aware of the situation with Ray Lewis. Billick said that he got the call late at his house. They had to deal with the situation as it happened, and they chose, because of their faith in Ray, to stand by him and back him up. Billick said that the Patriots made the decision awhile ago that if Hernandez was arrested that they would cut him.
Ed then asked whether the Ravens were dealing with the case blindly or ifthey knew directly from law enforcement where the Ray Lewis case stood. Billick said that although limited by confidentiality, they were able to get an ample amount of information. However, the organizations faith in Ray Lewis was the ultimate decision to back him up.
Steve then asked if he recalled the first time speaking to Ray after the arrest. Billick said that he never really had conversations with Ray until much later in the process. Billick said that they were very careful because they wanted to do what was best for the organization.
Ed asked if they ever considered cutting Ray after he was arrested. Billick said that because of their belief in Ray they never entertained the idea. Billick said that the NFL players of today will look at this Aaron Hernandez case and separate themselves from the athlete. Players must understand that they can be dumped by an organization for messing up outside of the field.
Ed then asked Billick about the impact this will have on the Patriots. Billick said that the Patriots have for sure taken their hits in terms of player personnel this off season. Billick said 90 percent of their passing offense is pretty much gone. This season will be a tall task for the Pats.
Steve concluded by asking Billick about the Ravens off season. He said he believes the team may not be better then they were last year, but that they are still a top contender in the AFC.
