Former Md. MVA Worker Guilty Of Theft Conspiracy

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A former Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration worker has been convicted of conspiring to steal more than $87,000 from the agency's Frederick office.

Joann Fleishell, 53, was convicted at a bench trial Monday in Frederick. She will be sentenced May 4. The common-law offense carries no prescribed penalty.

Fleishell was the assistant manager of the office. Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler says she failed to record cash payments for 613 registration renewals from January 2007 to October 2008.

He says the scheme was uncovered by an internal investigation. Gansler says the conviction sends a message that stealing from taxpayers will not be tolerated.
