Former Freelance Writer In Baltimore Brings Value To Digital Marketing
Geoffrey Hoesch is principal of Dragon SEO, Inc. In his own words, he stumbled upon the field of digital marketing accidentally while trying to promote a website for a separate editing and writing business back when he worked as a freelance writer and editor. The more he learned about digital technology, the more interesting it became. Then, when he realized what an incredible influence digital marketing has been and will continue to be for the world, he was hooked.
Hoesch graduated from Towson University with a bachelor's degree in English and previously worked as a freelance writer and editor. He currently has nearly nine years of experience in the digital marketing industry.
What are the responsibilities of your current role?
"I oversee all managerial aspects of the business, which most often involves making sure clients are happy and campaigns are on schedule. When the team needs assistance, I'll help with writing or handling technical changes to websites."
What is your favorite part about your daily duties?
"I enjoy the variety that comes with running a digital marketing business. On an average day, I split my time between communicating with clients and managing employees and work to further grow the business by reaching out to potential clients. Ultimately, however, my favorite part of the job is helping small and medium-sized businesses become financially successful online."
How has your education and training prepared you for your current role?
"The ability to communicate effectively is crucial to running a business, especially in a world where most communication is done via email. While English seems very far from digital marketing, the skills I learned while acquiring my degree have helped immeasurably. Granted, I had to learn the technical side of things, especially website coding, on my own. That said, effective client communication skills have always helped differentiate my company from other tech companies."
What do you do to continue your education and training?
"Each day I try to spend an hour reading blog posts from thought leaders in the industry. Digital marketing is constantly in flux, and in order to stay on the cutting edge, continued education is an absolute must."
Do you have any advice for others looking to enter this field?
"Write content for and design your own websites in your spare time. If you have an interest, create a website for it. Not only is this a great way to learn more about something you enjoy, it will strengthen your skills as a digital marketer. Read every day. Read about the industry. Read George R.R. Martin. Read Hemingway. The more you read, the better writer you'll become."
